
Indiana University has been awarded $336,000 to help launch a new experimental network research infrastructure that one day will lead to the future of the Internet. Part of the Global Environment for Network Innovations (GENI) Project, IU is among 29 academic and industrial research teams to receive subcontract awards totaling $12 million from BBN Technologies, an advanced technology solutions firm. Sponsored by the National Science Foundation, GENI prototyping supports the development of a national-scale suite of infrastructure for experimental research in groundbreaking network science and engineering.

Environmental scientists studying the world's shrinking polar ice sheets will soon get a substantial boost in computing power thanks to IU's Polar Grid Project. Funded by a $1.96 million grant from the National Science Foundation (NSF), Indiana University and Polar Grid partners Elizabeth City State University (ECSU) and the NSF's Center for Remote Sensing of Ice Sheets (CReSIS), headquartered at the University of Kansas, are poised this week to deploy a collection of customized computational resources to Antarctica that will allow scientists -- both on site and remotely -- to more securely and efficiently process data during polar field expeditions.

Fifty of the nation's information technology (IT) leaders have convened on the IUPUI campus this week to draft a national strategy for coordinating the nation's most advanced IT resources to promote innovation, research productivity, and US global competitiveness. The meeting brings together leaders from two key national organizations - the Coalition for Academic Scientific Computing (CASC) and the EDUCAUSE Committee on Campus Cyberinfrastructure. The workshop will result in a report recommending steps universities can implement collaboratively to accelerate research.

Indiana University students, faculty and staff on the Bloomington and Indianapolis campuses who wirelessly connect their laptops and handheld devices to the Internet will find greater coverage and ease of use once IU's new next-generation wireless hardware is installed. Users of handheld devices, such as iPhones, will be able to move seamlessly among wireless access points without losing their connection, just as cell phone users can travel between cellular towers without losing calls.
